Want to know how to cut through the noise with your lawmakers?
Writing, calling and emailing your state and local representatives in government is really important and can be really impactful. But sometimes it also feels like shouting into the void. So here's a tip for making your calls and emails way more impactful. Build a relationship with your representatives BEFORE it comes time to ask them for something. Most state legislative sessions start in the spring. So, fall is the perfect time to get to know them. Here's how:
SET THE MEETING
- Look up their info online
- Ask their staff person for a meeting to share the issues important to you and learn about their priorities. Let them know you're a constituent. (BONUS: make sure you're also a registered voter and say so. DOUBLE BONUS: bring friends/colleagues
- You can meet at their office, at a local community space or even at a coffee shop!
MAKE THE MOST OF THE MEETING
- Let them know all of the groups you're connected with. Could be a mom's group, a church, a big workplace etc.
- Ask about them -- legislators are human, too! Why did they want to run for office, what do they hope to accomplish?
- Share your story: who are you and what issues are important to you. Why?
So much of what government decision-makers hear is two sides shouting at each other. Building a relationship before you need to approach them on a tough issue will help cut through the noise. (Coffee optional!)
