Cleaning carpets - secrets revealed by the professional

Cleaning carpets sounds like an easy task. But when you actually get to work, you’ll see that it requires more than vacuuming weekly or daily. Do you want to know the secret of professional carpet cleaning? Let TheKingLive show you how it’s done!

How often you should clean your carpet

No matter what kind of carpet you’re having: area rugs, carpeted floor… it’s best to vacuum it weekly. Once a week is a minimum amount. But that won’t be enough if you have kids or pets (or both) in your household. So vacuuming 2 - 3 times a week is a reasonable number to keep your carpet in a good condition.

The process of a routine carpet cleaning

There are only two steps in the process of routine carpet cleaning. Sounds simple enough, right? But lets the professionals from The King Live show you How to clean carpets properly (and professionally):

Step 1: Remove dust and dirt

  1. Use a vacuum with good suction to do the job. You should choose the model that is designed specifically for cleaning carpets, and for pet hair if you have pets in the house.
  2. Move all the furniture that your vacuum can’t go under out of the way. That will ensure no dust and dirt can escape this step.
  3. Set the vacuum cleaner to an appropriate height for the most efficient suction to clean your carpet type.
  4. Don’t rush! Keep it steady and make sure you take time for each area of the carpet. Run over high-traffic areas more than others because these places have more debris than usual.

Step 2: spot-clean stains:

Throughout the week there can be residue from many “accidents” like dried mud, dried food… Use an old credit card, a plastic dough cutter, or a dull knife to remove the residue. No rubbing because that can cause the stain to embed deeper into the carpet.

If some spot of the carpet gets sticky or hardens because of the residue stains, do an area clean by spraying distilled white vinegar mixed with cold water on the spot. The amount of water must be much more than the vinegar to prevent color fading (it’s best to test the colorfastness of the carpet before you use this method). After 5 minutes, blot the spot with a paper towel (again, no rubbing) and let it dry completely before you step on that spot.

There are some types of debris that can easily be removed if you use the right tool. Here are two common messes made by kids and pets on your carpet that you can instantly collect:

  • Breadcrumb, crushed cereal, and milk powder: use a lint roller for a quick clean-up.
  • Pet hair (and human hair too!): wear a clean rubber glove and rub on the area to collect these clumps of hair (the lint roller isn't as effective on the carpet as on your clothes).
